Parenting in today’s complex and rapidly changing world can be incredibly challenging. Many of the issues we face and questions we struggle with are different to those that arose for parents in previous generations.
Taking opportunities to gather, connect and speak with other parents can be an invaluable support as we navigate the ups and downs of our lives as parents. Our own Parents & Friends Association provides a wonderful avenue for this to occur in our own community, and new members are always warmly and enthusiastically welcomed.
As another avenue of support, you are invited to attend a conference for parents and carers of children in Catholic schools in the Jubilee Year of Hope.
At this one day conference, you will have the opportunity to listen to expert parenting presenters talk about consent and respectful relationships, cybersafety, building your child’s resilience, sleep, managing anxiety, screens and brain development, and supporting your child’s learning at home and at school. This conference will provide you with the information you need to parent in this increasingly complex age of technology.
I urge you to take a look at the information provide below and consider registering yourself and perhaps getting a group of parents together for what will no doubt be a very engaging day.

Welcome Back to Term 3
Welcome back to all students and families to Term 3. I trust that everyone was able to have a good rest and have returned refreshed ready to take advantage of the many opportunities on offer throughout the term. Already we have had students represent St Matthews in Orange at the Dio Netball Gala day - a full report by Mrs Elston and Mrs Johnston is in the sport section of this newsletter.
Student Attendance, Uniform and Punctuality
Uniform - We would like to remind all families of our expectations, not only for the start of term, but also throughout the school year surrounding our uniform. Last year we completed a comprehensive uniform review and made some adjustments based on feedback from all stakeholders. Our high expectations on uniform including jewelry, make up and hair remains. We thank those students who consistently wear their uniform with pride, maintaining the high standard and representing themselves and our school well. I appreciate it’s easy for ‘holiday mode’ to slip into school term but ask that all families review their students uniform (length of skirt for girls), a reminder that the wearing of jewelry, make up, false eye lashes and nails are not permitted in term time, and please check that hair styles are compliant. We ask for your support, and be confident that the uniform policy is being upheld by your child. A reminder that the Year 12 school jersey is only allowed to be worn on Fridays. It can however be worn throughout the Trial examinations.
Attendance - The importance of regularly attending school and being in class is paramount for improved student learning - “Every day counts”. Being this time of year we expect absenteeism to be increased, but do ask that generally students are supported to come to school to engage in the structure, academic and social benefits of regular attendance.
Punctuality & leaving early - A reminder that the school bell in the morning rings at 8.50. All students are expected to be on school grounds BEFORE this time enabling them to proceed to class on the first bell. Students arriving late cause disruptions to the start of the lesson and to everyone’s learning. Please work with us to support all students to arrive at school on time ready for the start of Period 1.
Similarly, it is very disruptive when students leave class early. It is understandable for students to leave when they have an appointment - but we remind families to please make a note of this in their diary, allowing their class teacher to dismiss them without the front office having to ring through to classes disrupting the lesson.
Introduction of Semester 1 Academic Awards
In our commitment to ‘Strive for Excellence’ we will formally acknowledge the students who performed exceptionally well in Semester 1. It is important to celebrate these achievements two fold. One, to recognise excellence in the recipients, but secondly, to remind and motivate all students to continually strive for high standards. Students will be recognised during our whole school assembly in Week 3. Our Leader of Teaching and Learning Mrs Cecilia Swift will notify parents of the students receiving an ‘Award of Excellence’, and invite them to the assembly.
Year 12 Night Study Returns
Our Year 12 students have ‘hit the ground running’ with formal coursework coming to an end as they prepare for their upcoming HSC Trial examinations starting in Week 4. Many classes are completing coursework and content and are engaging in revision and exam technique sessions. I am pleased to report that we are offering ‘Night Study’ sessions to our Year 12 students 3 nights a week to help support some structured, quiet study. Already a great number of students have registered for these sessions. A letter was sent home on 3 July to families, and a reminder email on 25 July to be clear on the expectations around our Night Study program. Families of Year 12 students are asked to read the letter and encourage students to participate where possible.
We wish all our Year 12 students all the best in their preparations for the HSC Trial examinations (held at our Primary campus) and look forward to seeing them back at the Secondary campus in Week 6.

As you are aware 2026 will be our first year of moving into our new Student Leadership structure of having all student leaders in Year 12, and removing prefects with a more expansive House Captain portfolio.

Welcome to our ‘Exchange Students’ Ernestina & Jade
We warmly welcome Ernestina and Jade into Year 11. Both students are on ‘exchange’ from Argentina and France respectively. The girls will be with us for 5 weeks and we hope they enjoy their time at St Matthews, Mudgee and Australia. We are grateful to the host families - the Weaver’s and Burgoyne’s for providing them with this wonderful opportunity - and by extension our students who have exposure to different cultures and new friends!

RISE Youth Festival is for young people in Years 6 to 9, with those in Years 10 to 12 invited to participate as youth team members. Led by the Diocesan Youth Ministers, the festival is packed with fun, friendship, small group challenges, workshops, games, music, and plenty of opportunities to encounter Jesus. August 2025 Intention : For mutual coexistence
Let us pray that societies where coexistence seems more difficult might not succumb to the temptation of confrontation for ethnic, political, religious or ideological reasons.
As Term 3 commences our Literacy focus continues to prioritise working with students to become more confident and capable writers.
In the early weeks of the term teachers are analysing student data and developing annotated model writing samples for use in teaching and learning activities.
Teachers will use the modelled writing samples to explicitly teach writing skills throughout the term and will provide opportunities for students to practice and further develop their own writing across all teaching and learning areas.
Towards the end of term teachers will review and reflect on the progress made and our next steps.

Work Experience
When I was partaking in Work Experience at Church Street Vets I got to see many cool activities both on the vet and vet nursing sides. Things I got to watch included surgeries such as castrations and mass removals on dogs and cats. I got to learn what it was like in the life of a vet nurse in regards to setting up for operations and preparing for the next day surgeries. I really enjoyed being able to interact with the animals and ask questions in regards to everything in the surgeries. I also liked seeing other operations such as ultrasounds and x-rays.

School Based Apprenticeships and TVET Year 11 2026
During our year 11 Assembly lessons, students have been learning about the different pathways that are available through St Matthews for year 11, 2026.
During our Subject Selection Information evening which will be held on Tuesday 12th August, students and families will have the opportunity to speak with Mudgee TAFE and SBAT representatives about courses available and what each involves before selecting their subjects for 2026. Students can also speak to our St Matthews TVET Coordinator, Mr Barry Neaverson-Smith for further information.

As our senior students gain independence through driving, it’s important to reinforce the value of safe and responsible behaviour behind the wheel. Students are reminded that their actions impact not only their own safety but also the wellbeing of others in and around the school community. We encourage all drivers to adhere to speed limits, avoid distractions, and remain vigilant in the student car park and surrounding areas. Families can support this by having open conversations about safe driving habits.
It is essential that any student intending to drive to school completes the Application to Drive to School form and submits it to the front office before using the student car park on school grounds. Additionally, students wishing to transport passengers must complete the Passenger Permission forms, which must be signed by both sets of parents/guardians before approval is granted.
Together, we can help ensure that every journey to and from school is a safe one.

Sustainable Biomes
Year 9 have begun their studies in Geography this year by learning all about the different biomes spread across our planet.
Students enjoyed going on their own journeys throughout our learning spaces to compile information and solve puzzles to match clues to the corresponding biome.

Year 9 and 10 Elective Drama students are currently rehearsing for their upcoming production of Stories in the Dark by Australian playwright Debra Oswald.

Year 9 and 10 Commerce students have started the term with an engaging simulation activity where they were assigned roles as either consumers or businesses. Consumers aimed to purchase as many goods and services as possible within a set time, while businesses worked to generate a return on the $1000 they were given to start the game. The purpose of this activity was to help students understand how money flows and circulates within an economy.
Following the simulation, students connected their experience to the economic theory of the Circular Flow of Income, a key concept in this term’s unit of work on the Economic and Business Environment. Their participation and enthusiasm were exemplary, sparking thoughtful discussions on the relationships between households, businesses, and governments in an economy. We look forward to further exploring how these concepts apply to real-world economic issues and decision-making throughout the term.

Last term in Science, our Year 7 students took on the role of aerospace engineers in a high-stakes mission inspired by NASA and the Australian Space Agency. Their challenge: to design and construct a parachute capable of landing a fragile cargo — an egg — safely from the top of the balcony!
Working within a set budget of $40 and using only materials provided in class, students had to protect their egg inside a ziplock “spacecraft.” They had to carefully consider air resistance, gravity, materials, and structure to ensure a safe landing.
The results were a mix of soft landings and some spectacular egg-splosions — but most importantly, students demonstrated creativity, teamwork, and scientific problem-solving every step of the way.
It was fantastic to see such high levels of engagement and excitement. Well done, Year 7 — mission accomplished!

St Matthews Competes at Diocesan Netball Competition in Orange
On Friday July 25th July, our talented netballers travelled to Orange to represent St Matthews in the Diocese Netball Competition. Two Year 7/8 teams and one Year 9/10 team took part, with the girls meeting at school bright and early at 5:45am, full of energy and excitement for the day ahead.
The Year 7/8 teams played five games each, while the Year 9/10 team competed in six matches against strong opposition from across the Diocese. Although none of the St Matthews teams progressed to the finals, the girls displayed outstanding commitment, teamwork, and skill throughout the day. Their attacking play and ability to transition the ball down the court were clear highlights.
The day was filled with fun, great sportsmanship, and a true sense of school spirit. The girls embodied the St Matthews Way and represented our school with pride and determination.
Mrs Elston and Mrs Johnston were extremely proud of the girls’ efforts and are excited to see them continue to grow as players in future tournaments and gala days.
Well done to all who participated!

Mudgee Town Hall Cinema screenings are usually held on the first weekend of the month. The next screenings will be held on 5, 6 and 7 September 2025.
Mudgee Town Hall Cinema is a community sub-run theatre. This means that we are unable to screen movies until those films have departed first-run mainstream theatres (approximately two months after mainstream release).
The beauty of this, however, is that we are able to offer more affordable ticketing prices, as well as affordable candy bar options which contribute to Rotary Clubs of Mudgee continued fund-raising efforts.

The Capertee Valley Bird Festival is being held on 19-21 September and brings a range of activities for families and children.
The festival is the initiative of the Glen Alice and Glen Davis Community Associations together with Birdlife Southern NSW which has worked with the community in the valley for more than 30 years to plant habitat to save the Regent Honeyeater and other woodland birds.
