NSW Catholic Schools Rugby State Champions
On Monday, 13 boys from years 5 and 6 competed in the 10-a-side Catholic Schools Rugby State Championship held at St Joseph’s College at Hunter’s Hill. After defeating all 3 schools convincingly in their pool games, the rain arrived in abundance. The boys used an array of attacking rugby and ended their games at the top of their pool.
The boys progressed into the semi-finals, where they defeated St Michael’s Nowra 36-0, before moving into the grand final against the talented and undefeated St Augustine’s Coffs Harbour. Our boys played hard in wet conditions to come away with the championship 24-7.
Everyone in our St Matthews community should be so proud of the way this group of amazing young men represented our school and themselves. They demonstrated our St Matthews values in all their interactions. Congratulations, boys; you are true champions, both on and off the field.
Thank you to all the parents who supported the boys, especially Peter Raines for his stellar coaching. A shout-out to Ross McKeown, Adam Coughlan and John Freebody for helping the team in their success.
