During week 8, St Matthews were lucky enough to have the university of Newcastle on site at our Secondary Campus to meet with students to discuss University options and to answer any questions in regards to early entry accommodation and courses.

The University of Newcastle- Study Experience school holiday courses for year 11 and 12
The University of Newcastle has on offer a new study experience for Year 11 and 12 students, available in the July school holidays.
Students aged 16+ are invited to participate in short academic courses, run through the University’s Pathways and Academic Learning Support Centre, NUPrep program. There are nine free courses on offer to senior students.
These NUPrep courses will contribute towards students’ preparedness for exams, starting tertiary education and their success in future workplaces.
Courses run at different times over the holidays, either online or on campus. The face-to-face commitment for students is approximately 15 hours.
Support is available to assist students with the process of applying, setting up a student account and enrolling in the NUPrep course. Students will attend classes as a university student and participate in the course work and assignments set by the University teaching staff.

Schools Recommendation Scheme
The Schools Recommendation Scheme (SRS) is one way institutions make early offers of undergraduate admission to Year 12 students. The SRS will be closing on the 16th September, so get your application in soon.
HSC and Careers Expo
On Thursday 27th June, students from Year 10, along with Mrs Emma Kurts, Mr Ryan Barnett and Ms Lauren Allsop, attended the HSC and Careers Expo in Sydney. This was a great opportunity to learn about education pathways and career options post school. There were many exhibitors including universities; employers; TAFE; Defence Forces; Police; GAP year companies; Trades on the day for students to engage with.
Students also visited the Gallipoli Mosque at Auburn which ties in with their RE units this year and the Studies of Religion course in Year 11-12. I would like to commend the students on their exemplary behaviour and positive attitude on the day.
NSW Health Virtual Career Fair
The NSW Health career program runs over Term 3 and 4 and is available for year 9-12 students.
Stage 1 – Thursday July 25th 10am – 10:50am (Join live or all registered will receive the recorded session to watch when convenient). This will be a 50-minute recorded webinar where teams from NSW Health provide an overview of the Health sector with an introduction to Clinical, non-clinical and corporate roles within NSW health.
The aim of this session will be to provide context of the many and varied roles within the health system and will be a good “big picture” view of the careers that are available.
Stage 2 – Weeks 5 -7 of Term 3 (Aug 22nd – Sep 3)
Stage 3 – Actual session dates and times TBC but will be scheduled weeks 3 - 4 of Term 4 (Oct 31st to Nov 8th)
Thoroughly Schooled 2024
This is an immersive career program focused on the racing and thoroughbred breeding equine industry. Held over five days in Scone NSW, students will acquire skills through practical training, classroom lessons, excursions, career talks and three work-experience mornings on a stud farm and racing stables.
This is a program that supports students in gaining casual employment in their region with school-based opportunities including CII Racing Industry (Stable hand) and post-school opportunities including Traineeships in Horse Breeding and/or Racing.
Dates: Monday 9 September – Saturday 14 September 2024 (students will need to arrive to Scone on Sunday 8 September to commence the following morning)
Location: Scone NSW
Target Cohort: Year 10 -12 students with a genuine passion for horses and who are interested in pursuing a career in the equine industry.
Logistics: While the course, accommodation and meals and transport within the program is fully funded, successful students are responsible for travel to and from Scone prior to, and following course completion.
